It’s that time of year again! Summer is coming to an end, and fall is just around the corner. It’s officially time to clean your house. I know what your'e thinking “I thought it was spring cleaning, not fall cleaning?” The answer to that is, you should do both! Your house needs to have a good thorough cleaning at least twice a year. Spring is good for getting fresh air back into your house, trading in your winter clothes and shaking out your overused winter blankets. Fall cleaning is when you replace your summer threads with your warm sweaters, bring those cozy blankets out of retirement and set your fall decorations up around your house. If you don’t have fall decorations it’s time to buy some!
The main thing to remember about fall cleaning is that your'e not just cleaning up after summer, but more so preparing for winter. In winter you are just going to want to hunker down with a nice cup of coco and watch TV.
Change your smoke detector batteries...
If you were to do one thing to prepare for winter this is what I would do. This might seem simple but it’s easy to forget and can save your life. In the fall you’re cooking a lot more; Christmas cookies, turkey, pumpkin pie. If you have a fire you’re going to be starting it up once it gets colder and you have a lot of flammable fuzzy blankets around. That can either be the perfect cozy night with the family or trouble waiting to happen.
Clean your fridge...
In the summer I almost have too much food in my fridge. Whether it’s from my garden outside, the fresh farm stands on the side of the road or the countless leftovers from BBQ’s and going out to dinner. My fridge is a disaster by the end of the summer. If I’m going to be hosting any holiday parties I don’t want any of my guests finding a 6 month old peach in the back of my fridge.
Change or replace the air filters in your car and dryer...
Have you ever been freezing your butt of in your car and waiting an eternity for the hot air to kick-in? One of the reasons why it might take longer than normal is because your air filters are clogged with dust and debris. This will prevent the warm air from quickly getting past the filter and into your car, and also into your lungs. So, if you want to be nice and cozy this winter then maybe just trade that old filter out for a new one. If you don’t know how here’s an easy guide to follow. Cleaning your dryer is equally as important but for different reasons. It’s so easy to forget and can potentially cause a fire if the lint builds up too much. In the summer you’re washing very light cloths and the build-up isn't as bad. However, by the time fall rolls around and you start wearing your fuzzy wool sweaters, you’re going to want to get back into the habit of cleaning your filters.
These tips might seems small and unexpected, but that’s good! It’s the little things that people usually let slip their minds over-and-over again. I’m sure you want to spend the winter enjoying yourself and not remembering these little things last minute. So take an extra hour or two out of your weekend and do these easy-to-do chores. Then go out and get yourself a pumpkin spiced latte cause you earned it!
